Based on the sub-theme "Redefining the Value of Distance and Density”, ICF2021 Session B1 "Visions of An Urban Future" explores the changes brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. In particular, how the value created by distance and density in cities is being redefined. We discussed the image of cities in the post-corona era from a wide range of perspectives, including architecture, science, and art.

COVID-19 has greatly altered workstyles and lifestyles in major cities, but how will it transform cities and structures in the future? Also, how can we understand the essence of cities through this process? This session focused on examining post-COVID-19 cities from multiple perspectives, including sociological, architectural & urban planning, and environmental, not only to consider envisioned changes but how to turn these changes into city assets.

In 2019, we held three pre-seminars and a seminar on the theme of how our balance of ‘work’ and ‘living’ might change in the future by using the latest technologies.

In 2018, a session was held under the theme of how, in an increasingly globalizing world, could a city like Tokyo strengthen its own identity by leveraging its past to encourage uniqueness and attractiveness. Titled “Tokyo’s Future Identity: Leveraging the Past to Craft the Future”, the symposium tackled these challenges through open discussion from multiple perspectives including urban history, architecture, urban development, materials & design, and urban tourism among others.

On 13 October 2017, the Institute held its GPCI 10th-Year Anniversary: Urban Strategy Symposium titled “TOKYO 2035: Enhancing a Radiant World City” and presented a “Vision” and “Strategy” for improving Tokyo’s comprehensive power while retaining its own unique identity. The following section sums up some of the highlights of this symposium.

In the Innovative City Forum 2016 held in October 2016, 4 breakout sessions were conducted involving participants discussing the topics of Future Living, Future Work, Future Mobility, and Future Entertainment, as well as the lifestyles of people living in Tokyo 20 years into the future (2035).

In the Innovative City Forum 2015 held in October 2015, two sessions on urban development invited six distinguished speakers to participate in a discussion on the issues of urban identity in globalization and the relationship between urban development and area management. This section sums up some of the highlights of these sessions.

In the midst of the worldwide intercity competition, global cities are dynamically transforming themselves: innovations in zoning, architecture, and mobility are being constantly introduced to redesign the existing urban landscapes, reflecting new definitions of prosperity and livability. Exactly how will global cities look 10 years from now? In this session, the speakers will illustrate the specific urban projects and policies in their respective cities and discuss the visions of global cities in 2025.

With the enlargement of the city, the creation of future urban centers becomes an important issue for mega cities all over the world. What will invigorate city centers in the future from the perspectives of government, business, and academia? We invited leading experts from Asia who have been engaged in revitalization of urban center and explores the key points to strengthen urban center to revitalize a city by introducing the role of urban center and also approach by private sector.
