A study of vibrant shopping streets in five districts of Tokyo is carried out and their allure and attractiveness is analyzed. “Shoten-gai” (shopping streets) are areas in which shops and businesses concentrate in large numbers and are visited by customers from neighbor residential areas who come by foot or bicycle. The total number of retail stores in Tokyo’s 23 wards has fallen dramatically to two-thirds in the past 25 years. Even on the lively shopping streets, 30 to 50 percent of the stores have been replaced in the last 10 years. The most attractive point about shopping streets is that they can be reached on foot. They have an eclectic ambience which gives them an “at home” feel, a continuous history and familiar streetscape, and provide seniors with a sense of peace and security. We are reaffirming and re-evaluating the attractiveness of these shopping streets, and wish to introduce to overseas visitors coming to Tokyo.
